04 CRF250R A 1998 CR500R donor

Post by riverman »

I found a 02 crf450 bad engine on CL. Guy wants 1300$ I have not seen the bike yet, so what do you think of the price? I know it depends on the overall condition just looking to ballpark this thing before I go check it out.
The 02 is gen3 correct? Are they a good frame for conversion? I joined back in the spring when I bought a 99 CR250 roller to convert and I still plan on doing that one. Summer is always busy so I will get going on the gen 1 soon with plenty of questios and pic's.
I did a search not to much found on this year 450 conversion.

Thanks
Tim

1300 is in the right ball park check it out first i would check the swing arm bolt is loose and easily removed that would make or break the deal for me

most dirtbikes arent kept in very good shape but theres always that rare chance rest of the bike is decent. post a pic if you can. $1300 seems steep to me unless its in mint shape except blown motor, but im guessing if the motor was neglected so was the entire bike. quit a few decent 2002 cr250 for $1600obo on craigslist, should have no trouble unloading motor components for $600+. doubt anyone wants 9yo used camshafts and timing chain but maybe.

My CRF doner was mint. These 4 stroke motors let loose for LOTS of reasons... no telling why.

If you buy it for $1200.... the carb will bring $150, wiring harness maybe $40. Blown engineis worth a few hundred...

You'll prolly have $900 or so in the roller.

Do it!!

slow down turbo. it may be in mint shape but it dont sound like hes familar with what to look for. could have seized swing bolt, bent rads, leaking suspension. chain/ sprockets any good ? little shit can burn a hole in the wallet if ya not careful.

1300 seems a little steep for a gen-3 450. In this economy you could get a running one for not much more. plus the gen-3 450 is not a very desireable chassis. the conversion is tougher and the bike is known for poor handling.
I bought a blown up 03 cr250 for $700 and sold the extras on ebay for $800  they are out there, be patient.

man i have a 450 motor that has the side case busted out when the kickstarter kicked back on me. I would be interested in the junk motor if the cases are in tact, specifically the side case.

The price is a bit high, but, i disagree. they do need a set of 22MM triples, but if your a bigger dude they work great.

the conversion is a lot more work than a 2 stroke chassis. and yes, the offset triples are supposed to mend the poor handling.

I raced an 02 with 20mm clamps. Helps but the bike has a heavy feel on the bars when turning and a little quick in a straight line. I put the 20mm clamps on an 04 and liked the bike much better. Still heavy turning with a more planted feel.

Thanks Bob
I've been around the block a few times at my age. I can tell if the bike is trash or not. I'm new to the coversions and just like to ask the experts if it would be a good choice for a conversion as far as difficullty I'm a fabricator have been for 30 years so the work is easy. I'm not beyond asking people that have done it before for thier knowlege and tips and tricks. If some one has already done I'm going to listen it makes life a lot easier.
I'm going after work tomorrow to check it out.

Thanks for all of the comments
Tim

Bloody hell Asteriod!

You are just a gross 16 year old in an old blokes body, aren't you?

I've no problem with blokes being into bigger girls - but coming (pun intended) out with that, as I was reading it with a beer can to my mug just about drowned my keyboard.

BASTARD :x :) :D

Bob just keeps on coming up with these perfect posteriors - I reckon he's really a cosmetic surgeon who specializes in booty, or, more likely, a porn King Pin. :devious:

Dumb ass won't answer his phone and his voice mail is full. I hate people trying to sell something but do not respond when contacted.
