My favorite toy, Wilesco old smokey steamer

Post by britincali »

Ive always been into steam engines and had a little live steam setup when I was a kid, awhile back I got a D365 old smokey steam roller off ebay. It had been on some guys shelf since the 60's and hardley run, I oiled it up and it ran like a kitten :D

Heres the thread from when I ordered it.

Bob you nailed it BTW I did a little pop off valve modification

Cool ass little toy, kids LOVE it. First question is always "where are the batteries" always followed by "how does it work then" then followed by "theres a real fire????"

Well yesterday I got a generator streetlamp combo off ebay so I could run something off the pulley.

Kicks out a nice 4.8-5.1 volts

I just remembered I never took any pics or vid, so after a few beverages tonight I fired her up and decided to try some nitrous....

Vids uploading

Here she is running the lamp....

I ordered a bigger driveshaft pully as it has to be revving flat out to get the light to glow steady, and the boiler looses pressure pretty quick when wide open.

On nitrous

Seems the carbon buildup on the bottom of the boiler caught fire so I had to shut her down......

thats nice stuff, i always start projects and dont get them finished. somewhere in dads basement is a hit and miss staionary and the start of a case style steam engine. I'll take my little guy out to the museum and check out all the old iron the last week of july. I have a bunch of old sales brochures and flyers from 1890 something and newer with all the big steamers, pretty cool stuff. I used to fix old toy tractors and sell them, i bet theres 60 or more on shelves in dads basement.
i'll find those pics and catalogs i scanned and send you a link this week Chris

My Dad has an old hit and miss engine in his shed back home in Indiana. Pretty neat sounding machine!
