which 250 to get?

Post by hondahillclimber »

i am starting to ride tracks more now and my steel frame 500 is just too much for the tracks i ride so i am looking at getting a 250, i know its not a 500 related question but i was hoping someone here would have some expirience with one of these bikes that iam looking at. i have the chance to get a 2001 cr250 with the usual pipe and bars and stuff or a 2005 yz250 that is near stock with low hours and a new top end. i know that the 2001 cr250 was the last year for the good motors but the yz has yamaha's new aluminum frame. has anyone ridden either of these bikes? iam leaning towards the yz because i heard good things about the 05's but iam unsure which one to get...
any input would be appreciated. thanks

i have a 2000 CR, and i love it! 00-01 share a very similar frame i believe, so i would imagine they would be nearly identical.

my blood flows RED, so im gonna say go HONDA, but depends which is a better deal for the money.

Heart says Honda, head says Yamaha...

...BTW my neighbor has a 2000 YZ250 that has not been ridden more than 5 times since new. It's a bargain waiting to be snapped up for any (un)reasonable offer.

My choice would be a YZ250 from 2003 on up. Second choice would be a RM250.

IMHO - Buy that 01 CR250, try it and see how you like it. And then do an AF conversion! Being that its an 01 - best year 250 motor, you should have no problems selling it to recoup. I've ridden my 01 250 (when it was a 250) on the track and always wanted more. So with that, you'd get the best of both worlds.
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

Unless you have the AF conversion bug, buy the YZ...

I'd say go newer even if it is a YZ however "low hours and new top end", is an oxy-moron?

I could buy a good used YZ250 tomorrow if I had the money. One of my favorite bikes. I think the later model CR250s were dogs. IMO the only engine Honda should have put in those chassis were CR500s. I know there are alot of die hard Honda fans here, but I thought the later model 250 motors were junk. When it comes to 250 smokers I've felt Yamaha and Suzuki have had the cream of the crop for many years...ironic is it that they're the only two Jap manufacturers still in it?

yeah, the gen-3 motor with the case reeds had nothing for torque. the '01 cr250 motor was a kick ass 250, but also only 1 year.
I'd get the YZ

my bros fresh rebuilt 00 250 had absolutely nothing for torque compared to the 02+'s, it revved way higher, but sucked the hind tit down low! 02+ have a rippy almost 4stroke kinda pull down in the basement

same basic design, but '01 has tons of porting changes and a different carb and revised ignition. '01 is said to be the best 250 motor honda ever made.

ah.
well, i Honestly dont see how it could get much better than my 00. right of of an idle pace in first and second (idling with the clutch fully engaged) my bike pulls real hard, and really screams up top. torquey-est 2 stroke i have ever ridden. awesome for trail riding. although, i dont know if anything internally has been done. it has a pipe and Vforce reeds, so i know it isnt stock. hmmm.

Although I don't think they are built as good as the CR the YZ is the most refined 250 ever made. Easy to get parts for, easy to work on/tune and the power curve is super sweet-- although a little tame for my tastes.
There is a reason that yamaha has been able to sell the same motor for 8+ years with hardly any modifications.

I guess while they were refining that one they let an amature design the 250F, that 5 valve engine is crap, I used to get 2-3 heads a week for guide and seat repair because they piled up the valvetrain. Don't see much now cuz yammy addressed the problem with a cheaper price on a new head, but I could go tommorrow and get a plastic garbage can full of heads from the build room at the dealership! The jugs peel the nik often too, they do have the cheapest oem replacement parts tho. It just seems to be made way too cheezy!

Why would you bring a filthy word like 'valves' to this thread?
