Sproket/counter shaft issue

Post by eyesky2002 »

Ok kids got me a little issue going with my front sprocket or counter shaft... Maybe?

You all know the sound a chain makes when you push your bike around in neutral. Well mine is loud as all hell to the point when riding it sounds like my counter shaft bearing is gonna blow up!!! So I brought it back home and pulled the chain, I can spin the sprocket and it makes no noise, no play in the bearing and no leakage from the seal. Checked the gear box fluid and it is level. Chain is lubed better then a porn starlet in a double anal flick! Is this just the crap ass chain sprocket combo I got or is my bearing going? No way I can afford to rebuild this engine until winter and I am just getting use to it, sure hate to park it

If its an oring chain replacing a standard chain, sometimes its loud until the rear guide block gets " clearanced"....

If the seal isnt leaking, thats a real good sign the C/S bearings are good.

Whats the history with the motor?

Standard DID non O-ring chain, the swing arm slider and rear lower chain guides are what came with the swing arm, I would rate them at 75% I am sure the sound is coming from the sprocket, I can hold both ends of the chain and saw it, not touching the rollers or guides and it still makes it. Sounds like when you push any bike in neutral, just LOUD!!

94 I got from a guy on the other site who was unable to sell his bike and decided to part it out. Says he was the original owner and all he said to me was it had 10hrs on it's 2nd bore. Case gaskets are green and do not look that aged. I tried to PM him a while back, but since he parted the CR he must not be part of the site anymore.

I just started it in gear, with no chain and let the clutch out and the sprocket makes no noise other then it spinning :?:

its probably not a big deal, but I would split the cases anyway... $20 in gaskets and an afternoon are woth peice of mind alone, not to mention getting stranded out on a trail somehwere.

It was not this loud when I started riding it and I have been riding in very dry conditions everyday this week. So I cleaned the chain really good, it had a ton of dirt stuck in; already quieter and not lubed. What is a really good chain lube, something that will coat and lube this puppy up nice with? If that does not work, I will pick up a new chain.

on a 500 I won't even think about using a standard chain... DID gold x-ring baybe!!
My 125 used to stretch out standard chains, you combine load and friction and they wear unbelievably fast.

$44 :?: Where did you get that?

He asked what lube we rec. not whats the best band aid. I stand corrected, I don't think any lube is going to fix his problem.

This is what I get for buying a cheap chain just to get it on the trail. Cleaned the piece of crap again and it is even looser then before, I have had tighter dog chains  The whole thick lube thing is for peace of mind to test and see if it quiets up the pos before I spend close to a bill on a premium one. I took a broken serpentine belt I had and sawed back and forth on the front sprocket and it did not make a sound like it did with the chain.

I don't run any lubricant unless I ride in the mud.

Lube just gives sand something to stick to.

I just bought one of these from this guy, by far the best deal I could find
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DID-520- ... 0255567074

rocky mountain was close at $92, all the local shops were $130+ and TT was like $120

just suck it up and buy a good chain

Check your chain roller on the bottom, I had one go t-up on my 1991 and made a terrible sound until it fell off! I wouldn't chuck a good chain because it makes noise though, but we're cheap bastards up here in the NW!

Umm yah funny you should mention that, just came in from going over the chain, changing the gear box lube and putting it all back in one piece.... Not sure if I should feel relieved or embarrassed

While my lower roller is not bad, it is in fact brand new; but the sound is the chain rolling over it's hockey puck surface. I took it off and slid a piece of 1/4 fuel line over the stud and pushed it up and down the drive way.. Guess what... Quiet as can be, stuck the roller back on it sounds like track on a tank :? Chain lubed up nice and is not a problem... yet, we'll give it a few more rides

Do I live with the loud roller, try an OEM rather then off brand?

I am in Iowa, were cheap and poor

Stealership wanted $153.95 + tax for the same chain Danny posted, fuck that!!!! $70.00 savings and wait 3 days!!!!!

Top and bottom are both new 34mm eBay specials!!!! It is the material that it is made of, too hard.... I can run the roller up and down the chain and make the same racket, bearing spins great!

Just get them from hondapartsdirect.com. They are very reasonable. I ran the after market ones along time ago and they lasted about 1-100th of the time OEM ones do.
