I dunno yet. Looking at the Yamaha FZ6
and the Kawasaki Versys.
Leaning toward the Yamaha despite it not really being an adventure. Will have to ride a few before I decide.
Rode a V-Strom. Didn't like it.
It's mostly about rider position and ergonomics and not really about adventure riding. I've sat on lots of bikes now, and the Versys is by far the most comfortable, I'm just not sure about a 600cc twin. The FZ6 is next most comfortable to me. Some bar risers and it would match the Kawi. It's motor appeals more to me. I hear it is a race bred Jeckyll/Hyde type. It transforms at 8k or so.

I bought a 04 KTM 950 S last June. Wouldn't have it any other way. Big twin, big power and real suspension. All the other adventure bikes can't hold a candle to the boingers. Its a real dirt bike that can do serious slab if the need arises. I wanted a super enduro but I found a great deal on the S. Look hard at the KTM's even a 690. I have two pet peeves. They are a bitch to work on and they tend to have some serious wind buffeting at highway speed. The latter can be fixed. It all boils down to that mystery road out in the boonies that would be cool to check out if you have the right bike. The KTM can take you there. If you have a chance to ride one take it. At least as fun as a CR500 and coming from a die hard CR500 fan that is saying something. If you happen to make it to western Colorado in the mean time you are more than welcome to borrow one of the many 500's and take the 950 for a spin. Try this with with either one of your choices

Yeah, I know all about the KTM, and it would be ideal....except for its $15k pricetag. That is about triple my budget. No one who has one is interested in selling it. At least not that I've seen. If they were, it still wouldn't be at a price I could swing. I could sell all 6 of my current bikes and still not have that much. (Not to mention how bummed the rest of my family would be) If I were serious about adventure riding, I would find a way, but I'm not. So, I'm looking at used. There are a couple Versys available for under $5k and several FZ6's at about $4k.

There are actually quite a few used ones for sale. So that is a piss poor reason. December January they were getting as low as $5k summer is close so they are getting better prices. If you can scrounge $6-$7 you can have a lot of good choices. You might as well go first class. It only costs a little more. If you are patient you can probably round up a 950 for less than $5k. I'll even help you look if you are interested.

This is what I generally see:
http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/mcy/1629132259.html
$12.5... for a used one...with damage...
or this is better, but still way outside my budget and would cost me $200 just to go look.

I'll keep looking though, I've got a hunch my Sabre is not going to move very fast.

There was one last week in texas for $5500. I like the carbed bikes better than efi. You will to if you plan on doing much dirt riding with it.
