Silencer repacking
Silencer repacking
Someone let me know if I can use regular insulation to repack my silencers?
Thanks
Thanks
I haven't gone as far to study what the material difference is, just tried it myself and found it won't hold up. I've also tried using some ceramic fiber used as insulation in furnaces thinking I'd found some long life packing. It is indeed long life but the problem is it doesn't deaden the sound level for shit! Since then I just go to the bike shop once a year or so and pay the $8-10 for the stuff they sell for the job.

I just found this thread and honestly I never repacked a silencer until I got my 84 CR500. It would have been better if someone just stuck an old shop rag in there compared to what came out.
Anyway, my question is how much packing do you put in there? It's got the oval DG silencer on it with the pipe offset to the top. I would think you wouldn't want to really pack it tight because there wouldn't be any space for the sound to be deadened. It would be sort of packed solid I guess is what I'm trying to say.

oil comes out there no matter how you jet it, if you mostly trail ride it will be the oil that kills itits oil saturation that kills most 2 stroke packing
if youre holding it pinned then you will need some high temp stuff, cause the pink stuff will burn out
i use regular pink insulation, yesterday i finished off the last of a full bale of the stuff
the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.

I just started using the lexx packing from rockymountainatv which is CHEAP
$5.99 a package!!!
One package will do a cr500 Fmf Q silencer with leftover, it seems to quiet really well and lasted a season of trail riding without blow out.
And at $5.99 a package it's cheap enought that you could do it multiple times a year.
I was using moose packing which is $10 but isn't quite enough in one package for a 500 silencer, however I used it for years and was quite happyK

I think home insulation fibers are much finer than the packing fibers, so the heat kills them really fast. Just my theory.

There are also a few more random sellers that have some other packing to choose from.

I rarely have a silencer long enough to blow it out.
I will crash.
Usually it's the next ride after I put on a new rear fender or decals.

Well at least someone is paying attention. LOL..... Just noone wants to come forward and say just how tight that shit needs to be packed. I did a little redtubing and seems everyone likes to pack it in their can as tight as they can get it.AlisoBob wrote:Hahahahahahahahhhaa!BrianPaul69 wrote:I4. Moose Knuckle Racing
