THANKS MAN!
you guys are awesome!
I just contacted cometic since I will need the spacer to use a newer long rod since I'm counting on my rod bearing being toast too.
one step at a time. I should have this thing back together in no time!

Maxima FAB1 here. I refuse to use an "oil". This stuff is so sticky I have used it to keep gaskets stuck on parts for reassembly (it actually forms sticky hairs between your fingers). The only PITA about it is you have to use a solvent to get it off, no soap and water. But that is also one of the reason I use it!! I buy a cheap $4 paint bucket from WallyWorld and use old premix as my solvent.
UNI is the only way to fly, Twin Air are JUNK they friggin GLUE the fine and coarse foams together, thats beyond stupid if you ask me. I would also send an email to them and include a link to this thread and see what they say.
I like Maxima blue water proof grease. Great on bearings and air filter bases.
Dan, I have some O.E.M. gaskets and seals here, if you want bring the motor over and we can bang it out in a few hours. Sams can do the top end and he is 5 minutes from my house. He also keeps IN STOCK Wiseco and Pro-X...
Get on the horn to SH and get main bearings. Those I do not have here, but you can wait till we make a list of parts if you want. I usually tear the motor down first though, sux to get what you THINK you need in and then find other shit you got to order and pay shipping twice...

oh yeah, I'm an ebay junkie! I already found some proper OEM bearings (koyo)AlisoBob wrote:Order all your shit off ebay.... you can get some real sweet deals on gaskets, bearings, and such...
and I'm eye balling a few other parts (there is a used crank I'm thinking about)
unfortuantely the only decent gaskets are the cometc ones, but they only make a topend kit. I'm going to order oem case and side cover gaskets.

ok, so I pulled the motor out of the bike yesterday afternoon and got the topend off. Bad news... some peice of my main bearings (I think) went up the side of the piston (leaving a tiny scratch) which was probably when I thought I seized it, then bounced around between my piston and head leaving some nasty gouges
the weird part is that looking at the crank, there is plenty of oil covering the crank with NO sand stuck in it. I can't find any sand inside, but when I split the cases I bet there will be some caked in my main bearings. My rod bearing seems ok, but is a little loose, but it was a little lose before I put it in the A/F, I was just short on $$$, I'm thinking about replacing it with a '88-'89 lighter crank.
here are some pics.

my rod bearing stayed together, but is just old. since its an '86 short rod motor, I couldn't find a rod kit when I was doing my last rebuild. Just ran it, it was still in spec...barely. I'm not quite sure what casue all this though. I think I will find out when I split the cases.

When I split mine I found a collapsed tranny bearing and a broken gear dog, but it still din't explain what caused the smashed up piston and head.
The only thing I can think of is that one of the needle rollers from the rod worked its way through the motor, I looked and looked at the rod and pin and even with all the play it *looked* like all the rollers were still in place.
Oh and be careful about taking any pics of a sandy work area, the gestapo will come after you
