K, it does involve spending some $, BUT you'll be happy
I have this 500gb hard drive, the Iomega "screenplay"
works slick as shit, hook it up by usb, dump whatever you got on it, comes out on coax, hdmi, or rca plugs (Brit that means it'll hook to anything) so you dont need the computer to look at the shit, stores movies, pics + music. I have mine full tho cuz i dump all my vids direct from my harddrive video camera, and have my entire movie + music collection on it. Probably i'll grab a new TB one when the basement rennos are done, i think its got a wireless or bluetooth link.
I got dad one for christmas too, takes his projector + the hard drive when camping, was watching Little Fauss and Big Halsey on the side of the rv at a hillclimb.

If you're real broke and just looking to get your stuff off, pick up one of these and move your pics, vids, etc to it.

search craigslist for a new computer tower. then, plug your old hard drive into the new computer and use it as a slave drive, and then you have a nice machine, and trouble-free item transfer.

Come down to RC, bring the PC and I'll give you one of my spare HD's off my shelf.

I have a 100Gb external USB disk drive that I use for all my personal data - docs, music, photos and video. I back that - and my laptop - up to a Seagate 1.5 Tb drive I got for around $200. If you can get all your data off of the main hard drive there are some tuning parameters you can set to then get the computer to run faster. Basically no computer likes full memory or a full disk. Always create to disk partitions - one for the OS and apps and the other for data. That way they can be moved much more easily. And uploading your photos to Picassa can act as a "back-up" of sorts too.

If you take three extension cords twist all three together into one plug each one into a different outlets you will get three times the speed. just don't let the smoke out of the wires cause than it won't work.

That would be funny unless you watched your wife plug her US curling tongs into a London hotels wall socket and take out the whole floor's power...
