Unable to kickstart

Post by tgarden »

So I feel like an idiot, my 00 cr500 arrived today (shipped from interstate).

I flushed the radiator and put new coolant in, cleaned the carby, checked the airfilter and checked the jets, put some fresh fuel in and I can't start the fucker.

I'm a big guy with a strong kick, have tried the lean it over on the left, few slow kicks and getting TDC, but for naught.

It's night and it's been a big week, so for the sake of my retarded brain can people suggest some basic things that I have obviously missed. I really want to go riding tomorrow!

Have you checked the condition of the plug, might need cleaning / new one.
Some smart bastard might of put a line down the plug with a lead pencil.
Plug lead is on properly and you are getting a spark.
You have got the fuel turned on.
All the ignition wires are pluged in.
Some times the simple things are the hardest to find.
Is the kill switch damaged and shorting out.

Thanks for the suggestions CR500R7.

New plug
Got a nice fat spark
Fuel turned on
Wires plugged and checked.

I've got a massive run in the morning so going to bed, but I think you're right it's something simple, I'm just too excited and tired to think straight.

Cheers,

Tim

Might have a gasket that is letting air in somewhere, that can make it hard to start but I would not think that hard though.
Well you never know.

Depending on how much you've been kicking, it may be flooded.
For it's first start of the day I give 3-5 primer slow roll thru kicks.
Then roll kick until it hits TDC and hold lightly until it barely rolls past, stop and let kicker return fully back up then give a full swift kick. Mine will start first kick more often than not. My 120lb daughter can start it like that when her left foot is standing on a bike stand. If I don't do that drill, it seems I can kick until I'm about to pass out and still not get it started.

Yep, my 105lb 15YO does the same thing...I guess he really wants to try the 500!
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

Take the carb off. Blow all the jets and passages out. Check the jetting to make sure there's nothing silly going on there. Turn the fuel on with the float bowl off to prove fuel is getting to the carb.

Just be methodical.

Thanks all. Got it started this morning.

Looks like the engine was well and truly flooded. Cleaned the spark plug again, and she fired just try.

Still running like crap, looks like it's running massively rich and clogged the plug up after a few minutes.

I'll redo the carby and play with the A/F screw and jetting.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions, much appreciated.

Cheers,

Tim

If its running mad rich and a bitch to start I would suspect a bad crank seal and collar or a center gasket.

Thanks for the suggestion Brit. I'll check those seals/gaskets out.

I took it out for a good ride today. I had the float set VERY wrong because I'm a knob, but once I got that sorted things weren't too bad.

The pilot is a 55, but I'm going to put in a 50, and change the main from a 180 to 175 (got a 170 incase that is too rich as well).

I'm back to the same symptons as CR500phil had, and once I get the jetting sorted it should be fine as long as the crankseal isn't screwed.

Also FUCK, I had forgotten what real arm pump was like!!! haha damn I need to hit the gym again

Warm the bike up, let it drain (trans) for an exact amount of time (say 5 or 10 minutes). Us your pre-mix cup and put in a very exact amount of oil and then run the bike for an hour. Drain the trans again (while warm) for the same exact amount of time as the first warm engine drain and then measure the amount. If your primary seal is comprimized on the right main or case gaskets you will be consuming trans oil and this will be obvious when you measure what comes back out.

To test the left main seal just remove the plastic stator cover and spray a flamable liquid (started fluid, carb cleaner, etc.) on the seal area while the motor is idling. If the rpm increases you have a leak.

THat beats Brit's method.

He runs the bike for an hour with straight gas in it.

If its still running after an hour, he knows the crank seal is passing oil....

I tell people (obviously sarcasticly) to just run pre-mix in the trans when they have a bad primary leak...
