Gears...and more wider gears....

Post by Skidmark »

Hey there Hoons !!

OK, so fill me in on the wide ratio gear thing.

I'm just a retard, so speak slowly and clearly OK ??

I have a 90 motor. Tranny is WAY too short. I would like more top speed without losing 1st & 2nd's ability to cruise goat trails at a glacial pace....slow is good.

Can I use later year 500 gears for just 3,4 & 5 ??

Lay it out for me if you would.

MAHALO !!
"Skiddy"

P.s. I need a rear 18" wheel complete, or just a 18" rim or a 36 spoke hub w/20mm i.d. bearings for a Excell rim I already have.....
I'd rather be riding right now!!!

If I am not mistaken the first few gears are the same ratio on all the cr 5 transmissions.

In your trans you can use any 4th and 5th from 86-01 on your shafts

There are actually 4 individual gears that you replace. Two on the main shaft and two on the intermediate. Just follow the page out of the manual and it'll work out fine. I did it and what a difference!! but then again, I run a 14/45...

ya gotta watch the term "wider", the 98-01 gears physical width is more than previous years, but still fits the cases and mixes with '86+parts. The ratio is "wider" as compared to the close ratio '88-'92 trans.

if you can get a trans for under 180.00 us your still cheaper than buying the 4 gears to do the swap.

I'm going to put only the tall 5th from an '86 trans set into my '88 for a road gear, and keep the lower 4th for still haulin ass in heavy ground

I think the axle sizes may be different. I know they are for Gen1.

I made a pair of small axel adjuster blocks for my '02 cr250, and a bushing to slip in the brake, now I can run the 18" rear on the small axel, and swap it from my 500, my 500 extention can use either axel aswell

Thanks guys for your help and direction....

Yeah, I need a 18" 32 spoke rim only. Mine is coming apart internally.

I "won" a brand new complete 18" rear wheel on E-bay...listed as a CR250/500....and it was PERFECT....except it's a stock DRZ400S wheel (which I also ride...so no great loss there, and the price was right).

I also have a complete set of gold Excel wheels for a late RM250 that won't fit my DRZ. Anyone need RM Excel's??

Anyway, thanks again.

I'm outta here!

What about a real Wide ratio?

Post by exackery »

I just found a link to a company which is advertising a wide ratio kit. Same 1st and 2nd new 3rd 4th and 5th. Kinda pricey but if you want to play sometimes you have to payhttp://www.madmanengineering.com/wideratio.htm
