plug questions

Post by bigjay »

heres my plug i just pulled today, i really rode my bike for the first time today, i took it about 3 miles down the canal and through an orchard, got to open it up a little ,i found out that if you give a cr500 gas in any gear when its on the pipe, the back tire spins  anyway.. even with how impressed i am with it i can tell somethings not quite right ( i did however get it to idle at least.. thanks again Bob!), it surges a little bit when i let off the gas, and when coming down to idle rpms it likes to stay higher for a few then finally come back down. heres a few pics of my plug, i know it doesent look right but im not quite there with my plug reading skills ( i dont know what the cat i got it from was running but i ran green label blendzall at 32:1 today incase thats need to know info) what do you guys think?

How many turns out is the mixure screw at now?
What size pilot is in there?
Stock motor?
Stock PJ carb?

Turn the mix screw in a quarter turn at a time. If you get to less than 1 to 3/4 turn out it needs a bigger pilot jet.

A gray plug is lean but that doesn't tell the whole story. The other two pics make it look rich.

the other 2 pics are what it actually looks like, the screw is out 2 and 1/4 turns right now, not sure yet on what size jet is in there yet ( carb comes out tommarow) but the motor itself stock just a pipe to stock angled silencer and a uni filter. stock carb ( looks stock anyway?)

what ami looking for while turning the mox screw? should it start running rough or die? thanks!

2 1/4 turns is far for a near stock bike. Once its back together set it at 1 1/2 and adjust from there.
It shouldn't die until less than a 1/4 turn. Mostly were trying make the surging go away. It should idle down sooner.

I don't, and thats for the main. I'm just trying to get the surging sorted first.

When the bike is running good by the ol' seat of the pants... the plug will take care of itself..

Dont get all wrapped up around the axle over plug readings... ride it.

point taken :D i was just wondering if that dirty biatch had was partially responsible for the kinda rough running. its too black for my taste so im getting a new one, if that one gets trashed real soon THEN ill worry about why. im supposed to get off work a little early tommarow so the carb and reed cage will come off then for inspection of the piston and carbs current jetting. then if all goes well ill ride the piss out of it this weekend.

I ran high end plugs for years and then the 88' wouldn't start except with a B8ES, why is that? I ran it prior to the AF build but it wouldn't show much spark when the build was done, so threw in a $3 plug and runs fine. BOB????
