stripped out decomp spigot

Post by maddog1927 »

So I tightened a bit too much and stripped out the thread in the head where the decomp valve goes.

Thinking some sort of insert style thread repair would be the ticket.

1) Any recomendations on which style insert to use and were to get?

2) Any idea on what thread pitch the decomp valve likely has?

3) I am thinking it would be safest to remove the head and use a bridgeport to do the redrilling / taping for the insert.

4) Any other ideas, like maybe a decomp valve that has a larger thread size so no insert required?

5) Thinking of having another head done with the decomp on the side of the head for convienient pushing, is there a debate on the performance aspects of having the decomp hole in the squish area vs the combustiuon chamber. I "feel" better having it in the CC, but don't know that that is a rational thought.

there are 12mm ones out there, hard to find tho. You can also order that same style valve with a longer threaded area.
I prefer the hole in the squish area

Lol nice one bob!

I hate to say, but since my surgery on my right knee, and with the scar tissue and that I'm now missing a hamstring (used in ACL reconstruction). I love my decomp, and have even thought it would be useful on my 250 during the dead engine starts at races I go to.

No.... tap it for the aluminum pipe plug, then drill and tap that for the decomp...

Looks like the time serts are the way to go. The decomps have a 10mm x 1 thread pitch. Same as road bike spark plugs.... so looks like there are alot of thread repair options for that size.
