CR 500 AF for MX

I am wanting to make my AF 500 as smooth as possible for MX racing. I am not worried about power loss too much, just wanting it to be smooth and rideable. Any ideas?

I primarily ride mine MX and really have not done anything "special" to make it better for MX. It does have a Surf N Turf crank which calmed down the vibes, the 99 250 ignition really helped with cornering and bongers set up for my size and skill level keep me on the bike.

i ride mine 2 times a week straight MX. I am a decent intermediate rider.

Get a rekluse clutch, it will smooth out the power more than any other mod. they might not work well on other bikes but the 500 should havve came factory with it.

14/48 gear works well for most.

41 pwk jetted well.

suspension suspension suspension. the shock setup is key to getting good drive.

I've considered running a pro circuit or FMF turbine core spark arrestor.

I can't speak from experience but I think that might put just the right amount of mellow in the otherwise rather abrupt power delivery.

I LIKE THE PRO C SPARK ARRESTOR ON MINE RIDE ONCE A WEEK ON USSUALLY DUST SLICK TRACK , NO ADDED FLYWHEEL , MICHELIN INTERMEDIATES , IT IS DEFINATELY MAKING ME A WAY BETTER RIDER , PLUS I REALLY APRECIATE THE DAYS THAT THE TRACK IS TACKY.

I can speak for the fmf turbinecore doing nothing to mellow out power, it still comes on the pipe violently and is loud. but i have a shortrod motor too so that doesnt help the smooth delivery.

I generally ride at least 4 times a week, more if I can. A priority in building this AF was being easy to live with. Its definitely easy now.

It has :

G2 throttle cam system - totally worth the money for technical riding
Flexxbars - nice for the whooped out tracks I ride
Cr250 ignition - a nice improvement
PWK - a nice improvement
Rekluse clutch - simply fabulous
Left hand brake - mostly nice to have for technical riding, can make arm pump worse with MX
Dialed in ergos also made a huge improvement - tall seat and bar risers with low boy Fastway pegs
Suspension dialed - worth the investment

A rekluse or rekluse pro or another auto crutch is very helpful to make it smoother. Yes I do know how to use a standard clutch well. It's like comparing using a 100 year old hand powered drill to a new drill press, it removes the human error of engaging the clutch roughly. Not to mention you can tailor the engagement for the conditions and style of riding.

Short shift, ie run a gear high, really helps smooth things out.

Nuetec tubliss, especially on the rear tire. TRACTION in spades, less wheel spin = control, keeps the motor working like a sweet 500 should, not spinning and running out of rpm.

A 250 ignition is NOT smoother. A 500 with a FWW is.

Chassis set up is obvious but that doesn't make the motor smoother. Rear suspension setup is critical.

Stuff a squirrel in the airbox for good measure.

Anyone who says a 250 ignition is a good idea for an MX or Trail bike is on CRACK!

There is such a thing as an override, and it can be used with a left hand brake.

If they were so great, the pros would use them. What pro uses an autoclutch in harescramble, worcs, gncc or MX or SX?

The Pro's know what to do with their left hand...

I would miss the compression breaking when it freewheels....

I rode one once , didnt care for it.

Dont tell 95% of the desert racers I know here in Vegas, I wouldnt want their bikes clutches to suddenly start overheating...
