Getting work done on my 2004CRF 250 and 87 CR500 Engine

I'll check it tonight but it's no featherweight to be sure. I used .125 and .090 on a lot of it except the curved sides and very bottom which warped that were .062. The part where the seat covers is .250 as I wanted some threads without getting close to punching through.

Getting work done on my 2004CRF 250 and 87 CR500 Engine

Pretty much done. Have the petcock mounted and going to fill it with water. A buddy may give me a set of CRF white plastic for my AF as I burned up the right side shroud tacking one of the mounts to the tank. Started the shroud mount placement today. Still haven't measured the capacity or checked for leaks. There's a chance I may hit the yard/snow tomorrow. Mps 450 frame

It looks like that crack was caused by the shrinkage of the TIG weld when rewelding the Y. It's a little thin as in definite undercut in that area by the corner and there could also have been a nice small crater crack already hidden there as it looks like an original MIG weld if you look at the insi...

Actually it was worse than that. It was a bunch of Liberal Arts or Business Majors who managed to land a Civil Service job in Environmental Safety and went to all extremes to shut down manufacturing. I can't even use a particle mask without driving miles to check out one and have to dispose of it pr...

We used to have chrome and gold plating before the tree hugging assholes (EPA) shut down that part of the surface treat area. I had gun magazines plated gold and all of my new pipes satin nickel plated. I can only dream of the possibilities my AF could have had. I hate environmental whackos. There's...

I'll fill it with water to check it for leaks and measure what comes out. Instead of drilling the rear of the tank for the tank strap mount I'm going to weld one on.

Took the trailer on its maiden voyage with the little YZ and it did great. Closed out the tank as well. Don't like the hump on the bottom but I don't feel like cutting it right now. It won't show anyway. Getting primed for the live SX race. The hitch and all of the hardware up front is stainless. Cr...

DC works great on stuff from ~.150" thick on up. It's a handful with lower gauge stuff but is still doable if you heat sink it right. You're using pure helium also, so there's absolutely zero cathode cleaning action that you get when using AC and argon. With DC you can have a block of aluminum ...

Finished the closeout welds on the tank after getting it flushed out real good and have the front mount tacked. Hopefully I can start the drilling and tapping for the seat mount and tank strap tonight. I'm hoping to dig up the fallen leaves in the back yard this weekend and I'll try to get a video o...

Getting work done on my 2004CRF 250 and 87 CR500 Engine

Today was pretty laid back with the big Christmas lunch and a lot of people gone, so I jumped into the tank with relish. I welded in the machined mount for the outlet and even cut loose the thin piece of sheet on the front bottom of the tank and replaced it with an thicker piece. I thought that part...

He isn't even my boss but is known to do anything to further his position. Thanks for the kudos. I wish I'd have stayed with at least .090 sheet for the bottom as the .062 made it a real hassle. I did have to cut the bottom loose several times as it was just too tight. It's been a real cluster fuck ...

Getting work done on my 2004CRF 250 and 87 CR500 Engine

Snuck into work today and did a lot on the bottom of my alloy tank. I would have finished doing the hot cosmetic passes on the thin parts of the tank, but a dude who I really don't trust came walking up and was snooping. After he walked away I bolted. I have the thicker part cut out and waiting on t...

That might be some type of dye penetrant leaching out from some of the cracks. Once it gets in the crack it'll keep coming out until it's fixed or in this case possibly scrapped. It's just a possibility. There are tons of cheap four stroke frames on eBay every day.

Finished the head stays tonight. Went with titanium because my TIG machine is DC Straight Polarity only making aluminum difficult unless it's at least .125" thick or more. I also have plenty of argon but not a lot of helium as I used that on my aluminum trailer. I can now get the bottom of the ...

My Aussie Gen 1 finally (Nearly) finished.

What's cool is the billet machined look of the gen 1 frames. I dug my 97 CR250 and still think it was one of the fastest 250 engines ever built.

Just welded the coil mount but need to trim it to tie in a little better. Is it ok to add some length to the wires leading to the CDI box? I want to mount it to the steering head, but the 87 ignition wire is too short for it. So damned busy at work I haven't even started my head stays. Pisses me off...

Not sure about the tank capacity as I plan to have it drop down as much as possible without causing rubbing or making it a bitch to remove. I dig the big bores as I also have a 98 Iron Frame and had a 92 that I traded for my current TIG Welding System. A young guy at the place I ride a lot came up o...

First AF Project Started

Those pictures are so beautiful I was tempted to rub one out. Very nice stuff. That's cool about the sleeved down CR125. Back in the 70s I raced the 100 and 125 expert class. Seriously, the 100 class was huge back then and when my TM100 wouldn't start because I put an Elsinore carb on it and swingar...

Here's a video of one of the first starts on my AF. As you can see much of the plastic and exhaust is just hanging, but I just had to hear it. I even had the ignition clamped to the frame, but that's cool to have it even wanting to idle after getting the Keihin 39mm carb off eBay as is. Starting hea...

DO NOT MIG WELD YOUR FRAME WITH A HARBOR FREIGHT WELDER

If done correctly MIG on aluminum can do a good job as a lot of production welding done on frames uses this process. I would stay away from any power supply if it ran off 110. I have a Cobramatic at work for my MIG and it works great. Just make sure you have it spraying in good and hot and you can m...
