what sort of tools do we need to pull the forks apart, theres an allen key fitting at the bottom but i cant find what is required to slide down the fork tube to hold the dampner, years ago i had an rm5 that i welded a 32mm headed bolt to a piece of tube that worked well....surely i dont need to buy a tool do i?

Well, yeah it would be better to have the right tools.
Crescent wrenches are bad medicine most of the time.
They're good for smackin somebody if they're big enough.
Motosport and Rocktmtn have videos of fork service on their websites.

A cap wrench is needed at the very least in my opinion.
What bike do you have?

The tool you need is a car to bring them over to a suspension shop.
