Rear tires

I just got a couple of new tires in today.
I ordered an 18 and a 19, Dunlop D756.
First thing I did was weigh them on the trusty bathroom scale.
Virtually identical, right around 10 lbs.
I'd heard the switch was made to 19 in order to save weight, none saved here as far as I can tell.

Here's the rub, look at them.
I bought the 19 for my 250 and the 18 for my 500.
The 18 looks like something I'd like to rip the golf course with.

110/100x18
Looks like there is a big difference.

i just put the D756 on my bike, front and rear. awesome traction!

You get em through rocky mountain?

Yeah, I screwed around too long and all they have are the rears.
I'm gonna order a bunch more but only in sets of 2. They give a $10 discount for 2.
I like Rockymtn. The only problem I've had are my Sidi's have been on backorder since 3-3, supposed to be in stock friday.

The M5B hooks everywhere and last along time too its by far my favorite tire for the 500, I did notice that IMO its a better tire for a big bore my 250 doesnt handle the tire as well on the trails but its very ride able My favorite tire for a 250 is the Dunlop 952

I've been running M5B rear for like 12 years or more. I've run a couple others long enough to go back to the M5B repeatedly. My recent flat at the Desert 100 necessitated that I try something new. So...I'm trying out the relatively new Dunlop Geomax MX51.

While the knobs are not as big or tall as the M5B, I like it so far. Very consistent and predictable. Even more so than the M5B so far. We'll see how long it lasts. 3 rides, ~60 miles and the knobs are not rounded at all yet.


Mind you, this is on my YZ250...

http://www.ronayers.com was the best place for tires by wide margin. They've changed their website though and I don't see any offroad stuff... Maybe call em?

dont need a accnt at rocky. put what you want in the shopping cart and checkout. it will ask if you have a accnt but theres a thing to click also if you dont want to sign up for a accnt.

previous owner put the damb thing on backwards. maybe it doesnt make much difference hell i dont know. definatly dont want to be behind it thats for darn sure :lol:

I just checked out the reviews for the M5B at Rockymtn.
They're mixed but upon further reading they reveal the riders had problems on the hard pack which is not what the tire is recommended for.
All the sandy, loamy reviews were great.
I'm gonna get one for my 480 because it will be ridden pretty much in the post vintage class at Devils Ridge which is sandy/loamy.
That tire looks like the definitive golf course tire!
If you run that on the back, what do you run on the front?

Alot of people run them backwards, it makes for a slight scoop in the tread pattern :wink:

on the m5b i think you get the scoop when you run it forward. will still dig a trench running backwards too :lol:

Bathroom scales probably aren't going to cut it if you're trying to compare the two. When splitting the difference between a couple pounds you are really better off using something as simple as postal scales. The difference in most is about 1 1/2 lbs, and another 1/2 pound for the corresponding tube. Considering it's all unsprung weight you have over 6lbs of mass one can potentially shed.

Weight aside, there are also handling traits that motivated the manufacturers to transition to 19" rubber.

But yes, there is a good amount of footprint loss between an 18 and 19" tire of equal width. The bead on the 19 tucks sharply into the center of the tire which rolls the face inward, reducing the usable footprint. A wider rim mitigates this.

Well my digital bathroom scale isn't too bad. I weighted a few new tires today.

Maxxis desert IT 120/90 - 19" = 15.8 lbs (post office scale said 15 Lb 7.8oz)
kenda millville 19" (a litttle wear) = 13.8 lbs
Dunlop 756 110/100 - 18" = 12.4 lbs
dunlop 739 110/90 - 19" = 12.4 (post office scale said 12 Lb 1.4oz)

All tires are new other than the Kenda

I sure wish that Maxxis was on a diet.

What size are you guys using on the beer cans with 19 wheels?
Also, what size on the 18?
Looks like IRC has a wide range for 18 rims.
Those are some huge knobs.
Looks like that tire will throw some big ass rocks!

I just got my M5B 110/90/19. I wish they made a 120...

But, I got it for $79.99 off amazon.com! Came from Rocky Mountain, to boot! :)

The reason I asked about the 19, the 97 roller I got has gold rims and the back is a 19.

The guy I bought it from wanted to keep the rims for his 1997 250 but said they didn't fit. Oh well, I have some spiffy rims for my 250 now!
But, I just mounted a new tire on a brand new oem back wheel for my 250.
That kinda sux.

I wonder how a big ass M5B on a 19 rim would work on my 500?
Oops! They don't make a big ass M5B for a 19.
Is that really the size you guys are running on your af's?

I'm about to try it...the biggest 19 I had on it before was a 120.
