big spring for my 86'
i am in the process of re-springing my 86' 500. so far the front springs have not been the problem. the rear on the other hand, seems to be a problem with no easy solution. no one makes the proper rate spring that i need. at least not for the 86' shock. i have a spring that is the correct rate but it is for a gen 1 shock. if i could make the gen 1 shock work, id be stoked but that is a no go. the gen 1 spring is larger in overall diameter than the 86' spring, preload washers and bottom spring retainer. couldnt i machine a new lower retainer and preload washers ? if so, what would be the best material to use ? a 90' shock is about 1/4" too long overall, plus the clevis is different. i could machine the link to accept the 90' style clevis but the 1/4" would give me issues wouldnt it ? any ideas are gladly welcomed.

Measure your 1986 spring: length, ID, OD etc. then download the Eibach catalog. Go to the section where each spring is described by its dimensions and seek what might fit. This is what you have to do for the 1983 CR480R because the springs that officially fit are no longer available. However there is an available spring that is but a few mm different and it fits. If you find a spring, but not the rate you need, give them a call.

1986 spring = 59 x 59 x 275
1997 spring = 63.1 x 60.6 x 270
not much else is closer. this is why i thought about making new cups for the 97' spring. good idea or no ?
i think the bike is too clean to pull the motor for my 04' 450.
