Back in 1986 or so they let some journos loose at Silverstone in the Benetton BMW 1.5l turbo F1 car. This was the engine that produced more power than BMW's dyno could measure, estimated at 1500 bhp in qualifying trim. Most of the lucky ones simply couldn't handle the turbo lag, came in, parked it, and humbly exited.britincali wrote:Theres no way someone who aint a pro racecar driver could even come close to hammering that car, 900 hp and under 1300lbs is insanity.

The 80's were the real psyco cars, they were pumping 40+ psi of boost into the motors.

You puss, brit. I'd have had that thing pinned until I hit a wall. Those cars are almost bullet proof, just ask Kubica. After 75g's all he had was a concussion and a sprained ankle.britincali wrote:Theres no way someone who aint a pro racecar driver could even come close to hammering that car, 900 hp and under 1300lbs is insanity.

Gerhard Berger got an instantaneous reading of 5.5 bar as he lifted for a fast corner at the Osterreichring which nmeant when he put his foot back down hard he had over 1500 bhp. They put 4 bar pop-off valves on them and the engineers just learnt to ram more air in than the valve could handle and effectively by-pass it. The current F1 regs with over-reliance on downforce, attempts to freeze engines and cap power, limited mechanical grip from grooved tires etc. are so jacked up it is a joke.britincali wrote:redrocket190 wrote:Back in 1986 or so they let some journos loose at Silverstone in the Benetton BMW 1.5l turbo F1 car.
