Single coolant outlet head.. Pros/Cons

Post by AMA714 »

I know I read a thread on here before about the single outlet, but cant seem to find it.

Obviously a single outlet makes using unmodified CRF rads possible, but what was the downside. Coolant flow or volume, pressure etc????

If someone has a link, or has experience with this mod, please redirect me.

Thanks
Zach

I think it really dosent matter.

If you can get the correct sized single elbow to connect the CR500 engine head to the left side upper tank on the 250F conversions, it will look clean and OEM 4 stroke and require less work.

If you get 4 elbows and replumb everything to look CR500 OEM, that works well too. Might increase coolant capacity a tiny bit.

It all works....

I did the math.... the big single has more area than 2 small ones.

My stuff is all single and I've had no issues. I've had both outlet pieces removed, the head tapped for 1/2" pipe thread, run one outlet and a threaded plug in the other.

Thanks for the replies guys..

I kinda figured that if the super hot 4 stroke lives with a single, than the big 5 should have no issues.

I would like to see some ideas of how how hoons have done their own. May make me rethink how I want to do it.

It's not real pretty, but I didn't have the fittings I wanted in time.

As stated in my first post in this topic, both original outlets were removed, then the holed drilled/tapped for 1/2" pipe thread. If you do this, don't used a tapered tap, get a bottom tap if you can, or the holes won't be tapped deep enough to allow the fitting to seal.

I use a 1/2" pipe thread plug threaded into one of the holes to plug it.

On the outlet side, i thread in a fitting that is 1/2" pipe on one side and -12AN on the other (-10AN will work fine, but I like the thought of more flow) similar to Image

On the top side of that fitting, I use a fitting similar to this

I think you were referring to the plug in the pic... who knows that that is. It's got some jb weld or other epoxy around it and was installed by Glen @ GSS. It works and doesn't leak, whatever it is.

The one I linked in my previous post is the one I used when I did it myself.

the fittings are called ORB when its strait thread at the base instead of pipe taper.
There is a weld in version available too, keeps the height down if thats a concern.
The hose end pictured is a "socketless" version, cheaper than a lock style and fits common hose, but to make it lower you could used a forged end

fastkart - have any pix of the rest of the cart?
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

In case anyone was interested in the single outlet that Shanman used to supply... The machinist that made them can still do them. Call Rob at East Valley Precision 480-288-6601

this is way cheaper.........

I got this idea from Lonewolf's build.

CRF450/250 outlet elbow.

$11 OEM part.

Clearance one hole, weld in the elbow, weld the other hole shut.

**UPDATE**

Paul Stoffers has stepped up and purchased the designs for the engine covers (clutch & ignition), and every part I have designed for Gen 1 and Gen 3.

Additionally, I have taken possession of all the remaining inventory that my machinist had on hand. He will no longer be making any parts, so please contact Paul Stoffers for all future orders. Rob at EVP will NO LONGER BE SELLING CONVERSION HARDWARE.

Myself or Paul will publish the inventory list in the next few days along with pricing.

Thanks hoons,

ttm parts looked nice, but didnt work out all that well. theres nothing for a barb to hold the hose on, and its a queer sized outlet

I made some like that but correct, i'm leaning towards the single outlet stuff now

In one if his posts TTM said how tough it was to weld around the inside of the head outlets on that design.

Did it never occur to him to bore one outlet to 3/4 and plug the other?
