Britincali's Gen 5 450 A/F Conversion

Post by britincali »

Was doing some searching today and found squat....

Has anyone done a gen 5 yet?

Ive read about the shaggy bikes but from the stuff posted on here it looks like they are all 09-10 450X models (gen 4).

Well is home and ready to begin making that beautiful ring a ding sound

Got it for $1780 after a little haggling.....

hurry up and start cutting...
i think the hard part will be finding the rectangular tubing for the cradle
and it might be worth loking into a bigger tank cause i heard the EFI bikes came with smaller tanks
the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.

You are going to the first I know of Chris..... A truely " one of a kind " bike.

Image

The tubing isnt rectangle, its like octogon or something.... I dont think the finished bike will look like that, but maybe I'm wrong.

eriC is pretty resourceful.

I made this a sticky, so everyone can easily follow along.

When we do the tubes we can add tabs for mounting a custom skidder and lose those gay-ass hooks.

All recent S/H's are Gen 4 based, 250F frames. They dont do 450 frames.

Brit will have a "one-off" fo' sho.

I sent a PM to Gravel Scratcher, but haven't heard back yet. Anybody know if he's made any progress? I'm also interested in learning the ins and outs of the Gen5 conversions. The 250f's have been out for a year and the 450's for two, so soon there'll be plenty of blown-up Gen5 donors. Pave the way, Brit...we're all counting on you.

Brit, still a work in progress on mine. I get easily side tracked onto other bikes (twice) then went on a holiday for a couple of months
....ah then i bought a steely which has kept my attention for a while but gotta admit when i saw your pick up it has sparked my interest in finishing this AF.
Tank wise i went with a IMS 2.7 gal. fits ok but i had to enlarge the holes were the shroud mounts to the tank. I'm just going to plate over the hole
where the fuel pump goes, maybe recess a pocket for the plug.
Image

I had a look around for that wacky tubing on the rails but ended up getting some 25*25mm from Shaggy but if you find that tubing let us know cause i like the
look of it and would prefer to use it. The L/H swingarm spacer is 46mm and R/H 54mm. The rear shock is
real close to the back of the motor and will probably need to be scalloped or find a smaller diameter spring ??
Image

The Y will need to be raised
Image

The distance from the bottom of the radiator to upper curve on the Y is 80mm
Image

I did a fair bit of chin wagging with Shaggy and his X version is pretty close to the R in a lot of areas hence his frame rails and motor mounts,
they mount in slightly different spots due to different frame dimensions.

not quite sure yet ??? , probably flog em' off. I've only got the tank and fuel pump. The original owner only wanted to keep the motor, efi and exhaust

Thinking along the lines of a spacer but till motor is in final position its a guess. Had a blast on a mates 09, its super sharp on the handling and you'll love it
