you know its ironic because in 2002 I was thinking about buying a brand new rm250 and when I called DeWayne to get his opinion he told me that they had issues with the main input shaft and clutch basket. I guess suzuki didn't fix the issue even 5 years later...

...the RM had the same design... its a suzuki issue, not a 4 stroke issue. that was why I posted it here, for all the shit talk, this motor finally failed from a non 4 stroke related issue.

A lot of times this can happen when they kill the engine by just dumping the clutch to kill the engine instead of using the kill switch, also it can chip the gears in the trans. sometimes .My 2 cents. Glen

Hey Mick, is the glass half empty or half full? Some one is a little pessimistic...
This "unreliable" and "problematic" thumper ran hundreds of hours without a single problem. When it did break it was an issue not pertaining to valves or cams, the point that I was trying to make with this thread is that I have infact whitnessed and experienced more 2 stroke break downs than 4 stroke break downs and I feel the negative 4 stroke reputation is driven by the fear of change and stubbornness of a bunch of old timers who don't feel like dealing with a chain tensioner. The longest 2 stroke topend I had lasted 2 years, I bet my kawi makes it to 3 before I decide to do a tear down because I feel like it.

Hey i like both styles of bikes in different kinds of situations but my dads '89 RM250 ran for 18 years without an engine rebuild... all that to say it just matters how you ride more than what you ride. If you ride it like you stole it and don't know how to make the bike last it will die sooner than later. but if you can make the bike work with you not for you, your stuff will be good for ever... not than i am for rebuilding every two decades, i mean that is kinda dumb, but if you respect your machine, it will respect you. I think that is just one of those freak things having that shaft break

I wont waste my time trying to convince someone who is set in their ways. It's like trying to explain that fuel injection is better then carburation, id rather just keep enjoying the "goods" and let everyone else have the "old" stuff... :lmao:

Mojo, I thought the topic of the thread made the subject very obvious... and I don't remember anyone complaining in the threads with grenaded 4 stroke motors... If you disgagree present an arguement, otherwise go to wally world and look at some bush

Really? A run of bad luck combined with clapped out equipment (beginning with a 125) doesn't count. IIRC I know of an 01 CR250 still chuggin along on its original top end. And you havent had yur thumper that long yet. Come back in a few, 5 years and lemme know how its doing. If it is still problem free, hats off to you. Its not fear of change or new equipment that bothers me - I actually liked the idea when it started emerging - even had a soft spot for the old XR's and DR's that I have ridden in the past, it's seeing how many of these new bikes get scrapped because the owners cannot afford to repair them. Its seeing the stupid lefties ram their pollution paranoia down everyone's throat, having the AMA on board - rewriting the rules to accommodate the manufacturer's products. Why wont the bureaucrats in the AMA allow 2 Stroke 250's race with 4 Strokes? It is the 250 Class after all. Making it that much harder for youths to be involved in racing. It used to be a family sport where an average family can partake. Now, same family would have to mortgage or sell the house to finance. The sheer dollar amount they cost is just stupid. I dunno - I suppose I am against it just on principal. The direction this sport is heading just doesn't sit well with me...rant over.
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...

X2 I had a new 4 stroke last year. I like the tech and all. I got rid of it because I was affraid of WHEN it broke down, not being able to afford to repair it. I twist the 500 up cause if it blows, for the price of the valves alone I get a new engine

This is a board based on CR500's , Tits, Beer, and general shenanigans....

Its NOT a 4 stroke board.

We "grandfathered" in some members who decided a 4 stroke was better.... FOR THEM.

Their welcome to hang out and B.S., but the "4 stroke rules" stuff is getting a little deep.

Clear?
