Mugen dirt bikes were Honda based bikes done to Mugen specs.
I think Mugen parts were added to 1973 CRs up to about 80 /81 maybe even later.
It was basically modified / improved Honda parts to make the Mugen dirt bikes.
There was some trick 360 head / cylinder parts bolted onto a CR250 78-80.
I think the piston was 12-13mm bigger than the stock CR250 piston.
Some of that stuff is still available brand new, it would make a really cool vintage bike.
The dude that ran Mugen I think is Mr Hondas son in law.

Seriously? Johnny O' Mara rode one. He claims it was better than the factory Honda Works bike he rode the next year. There are now more Mugen Hondas in existence than were ever built. I've seen several Mugen replica modern bikes and they all look lgoofy to me. No one paints the engine and exhaust red. Ir's like they "kinda" made a replica.

Yeah - never heard of the builders. I think they're just sponging off the Mugen name.

A friend email em and asked for build pics of the welding and how the joints were done.

Reply was that [to paraphrase] ....as close to original as possible, no pics and wouldn't divulge their fab methods.......

I guess if it ever breaks in half you can see how it was done.......

If Mugen were to due up lets say a new crf450, they could probably make that thing weigh less than a 125 and make it scream, but it would cost $40k I bet

Today you can still get NOS and second-hand Mugen engine kits (250, 360 and 460) and other parts like swing arms, but prices are silly.

I've had a little contact with Mugen bikes from 78-80. A guy that I used to race against had the 80 cr125 kit. I wanted that bike! It converted an air cooled engine into a water pumper. If I remember right the price was about $900 for the kit. I considered getting one. But damn a new 125 back then was only $1200-$1300 and the 81' models were coming soon.

In 82' I went into a used bike shop to pick up some premix. They had a 79 ME360 sitting on the floor. They were asking $800 for it. At the time you could get a new in the crate 79 250 for $750 or a 79 125 for $500. I was really tempted to buy it. The next day, my transmission in my Vette cratered. So, $$$ went to fix that instead. 2 weeks later, when I went back to buy it, the ME360 was sold.

I still have a fascination with the Mugen bikes. I hope to get one some day...

Your source for everything Mugen - swap meet and discussion forum. You'll fnd a couple of owners here and there's about three guys who corner the market on the most exotic stuff - one in the US (Horvat), UK (Richard Wilf) and Netherlands (Henk Harms). The latter also builds whole bikes and does actually race them.

In 1982 I owned a Honda CR250RZ and I wanted to get the Mugen 360 kit.
I went to a Honda Stealership in Adelaide and asked for one, I was told you can't get them.
In the last couple of years I found that this stuff is still available brand new and also good second hand.
Most of the clowns that work at Stealerships have no idea what they are talking about.
A Mugen ME360 would be a great bike to own.
In Australia a race team had 2 ME360 bikes but they wanted more power.
They ended up modifying the engines and made them into 390s.
