05 cr500AF conversion launched

Post by m178 »

Today was the day I had no choice but to start my 500AF conversion.
Last night I put a new moose clucth basket in the 450 engine. Went down to Alamagordo NM to go for a ride and about 45 minutes into the loop I heard a squealing noise coming from the bottom end. I immediatly stopped and my buddy had to go get the truck. We drove back home and I pulled the basket and everything was fine. I spun the center shaft with my fingers and it squeled like a pig. I put it back together and yanked the bitch. Tomorrow I will be cutting the y out and fitting the 500 in her.I will post pics and explain as I go.

should of converted it a long time ago when you could still get a decent price from the motor. now somebody else will have to fix it which will detract from the value. not to mention the economy aint good and to be honest alot of bike parts arent selling very well. thats cool you finally got the ball rolling  . first thing i recomend to anyone buying a 4stroke for conversion is pull the motor imediatly and sell it before something breaks and makes the value go in the toilet

I may not sell the motor. Me and a friend are talking about fixing the tranny and putting it in something else. I think it is just a bearing. I will have to split the cases to see. The piston and head are brand new. I dont really care at this moment. I just want my 500AF. I wont bother with the 450 motor untill my build is done. I have a little under 4 weeks before the first race of the season. I must have it done by then. :devious:

That is what we were thinking about. My friend has the first year of the honda superhawk (sportbike). We thought about putting the motor in that. But I think I would rather have a Kart.

By the way Shanman. Do you have any more mounts for sell and would they work on the 05 conversion?

A couple of us will be racing NMDRC down in Alamogordo with our transplants in a few weeks, or look us up in Albuquerque if you come through.

Yea, I will be there. I have raced with NMDRC for the last couple of years.
The loops will be 50 miles long. 1 loop novices. 2 loops for ams and ex.

Naw...too unreliable. You'd get it half way done then the thing would either squeek a piston, or you wouldn't be able to get it started again. Sad to say the Briggs engine beats the honda there!

I was just looking at a used crf450 cylinder yesterday, the thing that caught my attention first was how tiny the passeges for coolant are compared to a cr500 jug. Do those top ends get hot? If so, I can see why.

ya did you see how honda "shaved" weight from the new 450...the weight they display on the bikes now is with full fluids. the new 450 weighs in at 4 pounds lighter than the 08 but look at the fuel tank size 2 gallons vs 1.5 now. im sure they feel the same with coolant the less there is the less the bike weighs....anyway

I have a gnarly on my gen 4 450 conversion, you have to cut off the rear pipe mount to make it fit correctly.

Ok, I finally got it done. 12:30am Feb 7th. Pissed off all the neighbors and it was bad ass. I couldnt be more happy with the outcome. Time and money well spent.

I still need to take a picture for you guy's with her race ready.
I want to thank everybody who has posted pics of their builds and explained what needed to be done to build one of these monsters.
This bike was built by what I saw and read on this forum. I had never seen a 500AF with my own two eyes until I built one. It all worked out great. :headbang:

So, how would you rate/compare it to the POS 4 stroke it once was?
