Hello from the Small State

Post by B440 »

Alright I'm in! And just in time too. Just bought an 86 after sellling off the 89 on ebay. I've been without a 500 all summer

Enough of that, here's a pic of the old 89, which I miss:
Image

Sorry about the pics. Sometimes my cell phone cam works good. And sometimes I am drunk...

And here's the 86 that I rescued from two little boys:

Ok its a wreck, but the wheels are nearly mint and it doesn't look as though the motor was ever taken apart.
Image

Anything that broke was cobbled together with bubblegum and playdough.

Check out this badass soup can silencer!

And the hole here directs hot exhaust directly into the airbox  Must've been for riding in Alaska at night? Or maybe it kept the mice living in the airbox warm.

So my bike needs work. Nothing new there. It was a deal that I couldn't pass up. Now I'm working on removing the swingarm bolt. It is seized to the bearings. Bleh. Now I know why I used to put anti-seize on that bolt.

Welcome. Looks like you've got a real project there. Should be fun to whip that thing back into shape :)

Thanks people. Definitely a project. The motor is already out of the machine.

My first thoughts on this project are to build an SM machine using a plated steel CR250, DRZ400 or lastly, the 86 frame. Not sure what direction I want to go in.

Need a lighting coil from TT :D . I think lack of lighting options was the one thing that stopped me from plating the 89.

Don't get too excited, all of this will probably be on hold.... I just bought a house! ....buyers' market.

if you stick with that chassis, let me know if you need any parts, I have most of a '86 roller and that missing kicker
if you want the kicker, its yours, just send me and address. If you are planning on doing a chassis swap it won't do you any good though.

Haha just found my old post. Guess I should update:

Sold the 86 motor on ebizzle to help pay for a bathroom remodel. Not sure what I did with the rest of the bike? Must've sold it too.

Built a couple 50cc motorized bicycles. Fun, but the Chinese scooters are better than those and just as cheap. Resale on a motorized bicycle is nearly in the negative.

I messed around with smaller displacements; PW80, JR80, and a KX65 to try and get my two younger brothers into riding. They didn't seem all that interested even though they live on 50+ acres. Maybe they need to see a National in person? I forget what first lit the passion of bikes for me. Any suggestions there would be helpful.

Presently: I have a 97 CR500 with a street title. I just need the street parts to get it past inspection. This is how I got it.

I spent a lot of money buying a subpar kit to make my old DRZ400E street legal and learned that I could make my own much cheaper, simpler and cleaner.

What got me interested in bikes?
My dad used to take me to work with him on sundays (60's) and because of blue laws, all the stores were closed and parking lot was empty.
He ran a Grants dept store and would let me ride the minibikes in the big empty parking lot.
The minibike made my balls tingle, swear to god
Bicycles were never the same!
