i guess i didnt explain what i meant very good...
there are hills that you can (and have to) go up 2nd wound, but going 1st gear ground speed... and clutch the shit out of it if you feel rpms even almost drop, and clutch some more for the fun of it
then there are hills where you cant spin your way up... gotta kinda keep traction, big sharp rocks, really steep.... the kind where theres no point clutching cause you got so much extra power, and all your really concentrating on is to keep the front end down, and the smoothest way to do that is to let off as needed, keeps traction too
(if your a trail rider you probably heard the term "whiskey throttle")
now if it was on a 125 you would have to use the clutch, but on a 500 all your gonna do is break loose and loose control, and probably not make it

the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.

I slip the clutch to keep the front end down letting off the gas is foolish... I guess I need to see a video to understand your technique2strokeforever wrote:i guess i didnt explain what i meant very good...

I usually let off the gas to drop the front then slip the clutch to bring the revs back up if necessary. But if you are in the right gear no clutch is needed most of the time...
But that is riding for fun...if I was racing I would abuse the clutch more...

as soon as the snow melts, im on my 2nd clutch this 6months, the last bit went fast because of the magura, but the rest i didI slip the clutch to keep the front end down letting off the gas is foolish... I guess I need to see a video to understand your technique Wink
when i first got my 500 i was about the same at climbing as i was on my 125, because it had power to be a gear or 2 to high and a slip of the clutch would get it singing so easy that i would end up in 3rd wound going really slow, and when the tire got grip it would come up so fast, once i learnt when to shift down it really helpedBut if you are in the right gear no clutch is needed most of the time...

When Im racing I do third gear starts, I do lots of tight hairy single track and a ton of hillclimbs ones where your constintly using the clutch. I've only been through one clutch on my 500 I grenaded the stock one, my 250 see's ALOT of hours as its my main bike. I found out though that heavy duty springs help clutch life alotM.F.D.B. wrote:Wholly shit! I sure hope you are doing 3rd gear Super Cross starts daily! I must be the worst rider ever.
In the 16 years I've had my 500, I've replaced the clutch all of once.

Use the clutch to keep the front tire on the ground not clutch it to spin the tire!!!!2strokeforever wrote:

You keep your rpm , traction, and tire on the ground, if you dump the throttle for a sec you lose rpm, bike momentum and probably have to down shift to save it!!!!

EXACTLY! you risk the chance of not cresting the hill more when you let offblownbillybob wrote:Use the clutch to keep the front tire on the ground not clutch it to spin the tire!!!!2strokeforever wrote:

if your ever in bc let me know id love to see you in actionif you dump the throttle for a sec you lose rpm, bike momentum and probably have to down shift to save it!!!!
downshift? i dont weigh 350lbs, i already got more than enough power to not downshift, even when i really should
you risk the chance of not cresting the hill even more when you flip over
