My motor's bottom end is original Honda ( 1997)

The top end is 4 years old.

I havent greased anything since I built the bike.

Expect a "Bumper to Bumper" service posted here soon...

42k Bump....

I'm doing the top end after the Pismo ride.

I'm guessing that with my motor placement ( not too rolled over) the jug will come off and I can do a " In-Frame" overhaul.

We'll see......

I'm also going to tidy up a few odds and ends. To date I havent changed anything from the original day Brit anf I beat on it at Dumont back in JAN 2008 ... and nothing has cracked, broken, or fallen off. Surprizing....

I think their all the same. The one in my photo is a CRF250R fitting. No "Reserve" outlet.

It has all that OEM screen bullshit cut-off, and the fitting is flush on the interior on the bottom of the tank to make it 100% usable.

Make sure you add an inline filter though....

Glen called.... told me my stuff will ship tomorrow. He said even though its ported for smooth power delivery.... it will rev out to 8,000 revs and lift my fat ass in 5th, no problem.

:woot: :woot: :woot:

He said it really runs well with a 41mm PWK and stock pipe.... well, thats my combo.

Roosty and I are going to Reno this weekend, then my wife is turning 40 next weekend.... I think a mid week Silverwood ride sometime around Sept 29 - 30 is in order....

Cant wait!!

So, Glen has been after me for quite some time to bore n' hone a jug for me and throw in one of his "Trail Port" mods as well. Heres where the saga is at, and in true Banned Fashion, the story isnt all unicorns and rainbows... in fact..... its a little disapointing.

Here's Issue #1, the piston sticks in the bore

Image
Not trick photography, friction really is overcoming gravity.

Glen said it was the thickness of the coating causing this. I dont think so. I'm going to run it, after I open up the bottom of the cylinder a little bit.

Image
You can see the tight spot where the piston coating is getting scraped off.

Issue #2 is the piston itself, its full of holes. I specifically asked Glen not to do this.
Image

Image
The spacing of the holes is all willy-nilly. Why?

Image
Heres the port window Glen says is necessary for his porting to breath properly. Thats fine. But its drilled offest to the centerline of the piston. It just seems sloppy.

Issue #3 is the transfer port timing. The left side is off when compared to the right side.

Image

Image

Image

I know were only talking a few degrees here, but again.. it just dosent seem correct. Glen says it breathes better this way. We'll see.

Issue #4 is head. Its beautiful....
Image
but Glen marked it as having 0.124" milled off, and the quench recut. Will it run on pump gas? I sure hope so. Glen said its right on the fine line of needing race gas. That not what I wanted at all.

It may seem like I'm all sour on this... I'm not. I'm very hard to please... too hard many people think. Heres another example: My beloved Omega Speedmaster watch. See the tiny Omega logo engraved in the center of the crystal?

Image

Whwn they manufacture the watch, they just toss in the crystal, and how ever the crystal lands.. there it stays. What the fucks with that!!! It should be placed correctly, right?

And thats my life, and thats my experience with Glen. This is not intended to be a slam piece on Glen, or GSS. Glen has many, many, many satisified customers on this site, and I'll probably be one too once I fire my bike up and take it for a spin.... time will tell.

I realize that this is just a dirt bike, but I still want it as "right" as I can get it. Most of what I posted up is cosmetic and wont make a shit of difference once its together.

Glen offered to replace the cylinder, head, and piston with all new stuff if that was what it would take to " make things right". Things are "right " Glen, and I appriciate the offer. Its a sign of what a good vendor you are.

But thats not what this site is all about. Its about the truth, and not sweeping shit under the rug. Its about you finding out how picky some of your customers can be, and what you need to do to keep them satisified.

I have no hard feelings towards Glen, and I hope he dosent towards me for posting this. Like I said before, Glen has allot of satisified customers... this is MY EXPERIENCE with the man, nothing more.

It may take me a few weeks to grease up everything, fix my leaking radiator and waterpump, and overhaul my top end with my GSS stuff.

When I do, I'll run a few tanks of gas through it, and post up a full ride report.

A few tanks of pump gas, right Glen?
